The House of the Spirits

Isabel Allende describes the trials and tribulations, both paranormal and political, of the Trueba family over 4 generations living in Chile. Clara is the strongest of a line of strong-willed female characters who dominate the book. She marries Esteban Trueba, a deranged right-wing bigot, as misogynistic as he is hopelessly lovelorn. My picture is of ‘Clara the Clairvoyant’ demonstrating her telekinetic powers by hovering above the enormous Barbaras, her loyal childhood dog.

Pen and photo-montage.

"It was true there had been times, just as they ... were about to sit down to dinner and everyone was in the large dining room, seating according to dignity and position, when the saltcellar would suddenly begin to shake and move among the plates and goblets without any visible source of energy or sign of illusionist's trick. NĂvea would pull Clara's braids and that would be enough to wake her daughter from her mad distraction and return the saltcellar to immobility." Isabel Allende
